Default A suggestion for Rangers in Hell's Precipice

I have to say that the greatest irony I found in the entire game is the fact that as a ranger, it's incredibly difficult to get into a mission group, almost impossible even. That is, right up until the last mission: Hell's Precipice. Suddenly, everyone wants a ranger! No matter that before we were avoided, even shunned from their groups, the same people now need us for their mission thanks to the one vital skill of Winter.

Well, after spending the better part of a weekend trying to get through this mission, I got tired of always having those one or two idiots who get everyone else killed just before the end, or the lame noobs who quit just because one battle didn't go quite as well as they would have liked. So, I decided to do it with henchmen. I had two other players with me who felt the same, a monk and an elementalist. We breezed through most of the mission, then after we beat rurik, the ele had an emergency and went afk for a few minutes. Before he got back, we had beaten the lich and watched the concluding cutscene. I couldn't believe how easy it had been, especially compared to the mess we had any time we went with a full group of players.

So, for all you rangers in Hell's Precipice looking for a group, here's my suggestion: don't. Don't bother joining those groups who plead "glf ranger w/winter!", because although for the first time they need you, you don't need them! After countless missions where they made you wait two hours to get invited to a group, why help them out? Grab some henchies, maybe a friend, and go at it yourselves! Show them once and for all how powerful a ranger is, do it on your own!

Have I become a bit cynical about this? Probably. Am I serious about this? Good question, feel free to take me as seriously as you like, I'll just say I'd be disappointed if at least a few people didn't find some humor in reading this. Ok, maybe a sort of perverse, sarcastic sort of humor, but humor nonetheless. Anyway, have fun gaming everyone

pets - dont even want to mention em. they allways get in the way [rush on mobbs when they shouldnt] or block warriors way in combat. they should be siting near masters legs and attack on call

any class can lure if he knows how.. erm finished hell mish with one monk and 3 rangers and [monk was luring mobbs] all rangers were doing was casting winter [of coures one forgot to equip it]

ok thats one good use of ranger but still its only one mish

No argument there, I'd love to see some more variety in elementalists for that matter. Still, for whatever reason, Precipice seems to be the one mission where groups can't do without a ranger...

That's ok, you don't have to get it. No one says you have to play a ranger or even play with rangers. My problem is with those who only want us when they think we're useful and won't have anything to do with us otherwise. We know our strengths, otherwise we wouldn't be so determined to keep playing rangers, despite our general state of loneliness

My Ranger was my first true character that beat the game. I've never ever really needed any party to get me through. In fact I've often found that playing with mostly henchmen and maybe one to two other quality players saves a lot of time and frustration. I throw in a random person just to make things a little interesting.

Of course now in some areas (such as back in Ascalon) where the henches are only lvl 4, and you are up against lvl 24-30 baddies things would be a little difficult. But now I've got my guild to back me.

My suggestion is to play with guild members only, and fill the rest with henches. Rangers are very self sufficient once configured properly for the situation.

Charcoal is gonna be a water ele the name is going to confuse the enemies.

when i did it with my necro i had no ranger in my team, it was only 6 people by the time we got to the portals and we only had henchmen healers. that was fun...
rangers are by no means an absolute must but they are useful (as ever).

I almost fell out of my chair when I first went back to Hell's Precipice and I got 5 blind invites. I was wondering what the crap was going on and then I noticed that a lot of people were looking for Rangers with Winter. It's amazing how things change after some time, because the last time I was there was months ago and literally no one was looking for people who had Winter.

I now know, after going to Hell's Precipice, how Monks feel at times. It's fun to be needed, but when you get bitched at for not putting down Winter 30 seconds after you put one down earlier; it gets annoying. Especially since the person screaming, "PUT DOWN WINTER" doesn't realize that there's a 60 second recharge time on it without using Serpent's Quickness or Quickening Zephyr. This usually comes from bad PUGs, though.

I agree that forming your own group is usually the best thing to do. I've spent a few minutes looking for groups in towns / missions and often don't get picked. It's just way better to start your own, even if it is with henchies.

Well henchmen at level 20 are awesome. Players suck once you get to level 20 with henchmen.

Well, to be honest, it doesn't seem like any other element has the huge area of effect, damage over time that fire has. Water alone will not necessarily suffice in those missions (depending on the group of course). Any other element does extra damage with Winter up, so it makes sense to use it against fire-resistant creatures. Lots of warriors have fiery/shocking/ebon weapons as well - their damage is increased with Winter also.

Even if you manage to find an elementalist who has "dragged" themselves away from fire to earth or air, the Winter is essential to making it efficient in that mission.

I'm not saying a W/R couldn't do it. It just seems that warriors tank and that's a pretty consuming job, at least to a warrior who wants to keep his spellcastors alive. Warriors have enough on their minds without having to watch to make sure winter is always out. Ranger primes or secondaries that aren't monks, tanks or nukers would be able to do it more dutifully.

Note: I'm not bashing the W/R, I'm merely pointing out that they are important and you have 8 slots, you can fit a ranger in there somewhere.

I do not know why rangers are wanted just for winter for Hell's Precipiece. For the ring of fire missions, never needed one. Sure, many people say it becomes easier. But if any of you have read what I've posted before on missions and what not, it's skill. If you can't lure, don't know how to position, or do teamwork, you're pretty much screwed even with winter.

The need for rangers? Not exactly NEED them, but they ARE great. Jack of all trades as what someone named rangers in one build post. Disrupting, traps, winter or whatever. If you play a ranger smart, you might be useful.

Ditto for warriors. This mission is not very hard with all henchmen if you take your sweet time. Did it with my W/MO, no Winter is needed. A bit of a letdown actually, I considered Abaddon's Mouth much harder. Also wow that last boss is a bit wimpy.

Winter magnifies elemental damage on those Titans because they have lower AL against cold attacks and increased AL against fire.

So technically, an air elementalist would do better than fire without winter but would do even better with winter.

Unless you're doing cold damage already, winter helps a lot.

Mesmers with chaos damage/degen and necros with dark/cold damage also do just fine.
